Minister White Announces BAI Board and Compliance Committee Appointments

Minister for Communications, Alex White T.D., announced that two appointments to Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) and two appointments to the Compliance Committee of the BAI were approved by Government today.

The following appointments were made:

Broadcasting Authority of Ireland
  • Seamus Martin
  • Seán Ó Mórdha

BAI Compliance Committee
  • Nigel Heneghan
  • Brian O Callaghan

Welcoming the appointments, Minister White said: “Today’s appointments bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the Authority and Compliance Committee, and I am delighted to appoint candidates of this calibre. I wish them well in the work ahead.”

The Authority has overall responsibility for the operation and functioning of the BAI, which includes setting the strategic direction of the organisation.

The Compliance Committee has the role of ensuring that broadcasters comply with their licence conditions and with the standards set out in the broadcasting codes and rules.

Broadcasting Authority of Ireland - biographies

Seamus Martin
Seamus Martin is a former Irish Times Editor (Features Editor, Columnist, Editor of the Irish Times Electronic Publications, Moscow Correspondent, South Africa Correspondent and International Editor). He is also a consultant and researcher for various radio and TV programmes and is a Winner of Gold Award 2012 at New York Festivals World Best Radio Programmes for ‘Death of an Empire’ five part series on Russia.

Seán Ó Mórdha
Seán Ó Mórdha is an independent producer, director and broadcaster of documentary film and television focusing on Irish culture, history, language and literature. He is also a former producer/director at RTÉ.

BAI Compliance Committee - biographies

Nigel Heneghan
Nigel Heneghan has been managing director of Heneghan PR, an independent Irish-owned public relations company, since 1998. He serves on the Board of the Public Relations Consultants Association in Ireland, and was Chairman of the Association for two years until February of this year. He also served on the Board of the International Communications Consultancy Organisation (ICCO), which is a global representative organisation for the public relations consultancy profession. Previously in 1999 and 2000, he was President of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland.

Brian O’Callaghan
Brian O’Callaghan (BCL, Cert IoD, M.MII, M.Inst.Dir, SIRM), qualified as a Solicitor in 1982 and practised as the Principal in a general legal practice in County Cork from 1982 until 2008 when he relocated to Galway with his family. He commenced with a new general legal practice in Galway on the 1st of December 2009. He brings with him substantial experience in all areas of law both private and public. Brian is certified member of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland and is also a volunteer member of FLAC Galway.
