Dublin 20 February 2015
Minister for Energy, Alex White T.D., today (Friday) welcomed Electric Ireland’s announcement that it is to reduce its residential gas prices by 2.5% from April 1st 2015. The company’s announcement follows recent earlier announcements by BGE and SSE in January that they were to cut their domestic gas prices, by 3.5% and 4% respectively.
Today’s announcement comes after Minister White concluded a series of separate meetings with the energy companies to discuss the speed with which wholesale energy price reductions are being reflected in household bills. Most suppliers have reduced their electricity prices.
Minister White said: “This is a welcome sign of action by the energy companies, and while small, this reduction will further help reduce domestic energy prices.” The Minister added that “It is hugely important that consumers shop around to ensure that they get the best price. I would encourage all consumers to do so. There are many value offers in the market from suppliers, including significant discounts”.
Note to Editors
Neither the Minister nor the regulator (the Commission for Energy Regulation) have statutory powers to compel energy suppliers to reduce prices.
