Many products and appliances in our homes use batteries and accumulators as their energy source. When these batteries and accumulators reach their end of life many of their components could be recycled, avoiding the release of hazardous substances to the environment and, in addition, provide valuable materials to important products and production processes.
EU and national legislation on waste batteries aims to promote the recycling of waste batteries by setting targets for the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste batteries in an environmentally sound manner.
Waste batteries must not be disposed of in general refuse or mixed waste streams.
Under the legislation final users of batteries and accumulators are entitled to leave that waste back free of charge, either to retail outlets or other authorised collection points, including local authority civic amenity sites.
