National Spring Clean (NSC) is traditionally run annually throughout the month of April during which volunteers get out and clean up the countryside and cities.
Volunteers are equipped with free materials donated by NSC sponsors and the collected litter is recycled or disposed of in partnership with local authorities.
National Spring Clean is run by An Taisce and co-financed by the Department. It is a multi-sectoral initiative that promotes public awareness and participation in local litter clean-ups and awareness actions to improve the local environment. The campaign includes a central role for local authorities to co-ordinate and assist events at local level. 2016 marked the 18th anniversary of the campaign and it was deemed a resounding success with 5,476 events organised across the country. An estimated 2,768 tonnes of litter collected and with approximately 35% of the total amount of waste collected recycled.
Registration for the 2017 event is now open.
