Climate change is recognised as the most serious and threatening global environmental problem. There is scientific consensus that humans are contributing to climate change through the emission of substantial amounts of greenhouse gases. In Ireland, approximately 60% of greenhouse gas emissions derive from energy related uses in the residential, transport, energy, industrial and commercial sectors, which remain primarily dependent on fossil fuels.
We are supportive of EU ambition on climate and energy and are committed to making a contribution that is technically feasible, cost-effective and fair in terms of the distribution of the levels of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels across Member States.
Reducing our reliance on fossil fuels will require more efficient use of energy, see more information and details on what we are doing to improve our energy efficiency
It will also require an increase in the use of our renewable energy resources and doing so will also enhance our energy security and help support economic activity.
