The EU has set binding targets for Member States to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20% by 2020.
In addition, under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) Ireland is committed to produce from renewable sources at least 16% of all energy consumed by 2020. This will be met by 40% from renewable electricity, 12% from renewable heat and 10% from the renewable transport sector.
Please see the
National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) for further details on the measures and policies that are in place to meet this obligation and can be found in NREAP and progress reports submitted to the European Commission
