The European Commission adopted an EU adaptation strategy in April 2013. The strategy has 3 key objectives:
- Promoting adaptation by member states: The Commission is encouraging all Member States to adopt comprehensive adaptation strategies and is supporting adaptation in cities through the Mayors Adapt initiative
Mainstreaming adaptation into key EU policies: Promoting the importance of adaptation in key EU policy areas such as Agriculture(CAP), Fisheries(CFP) and Cohesion(Structural funds etc)
- Providing better adaptation information for decision makers: The EU has developed the European Climate Adaptation Platform, Climate Adapt which contains comprehensive information on adaptation actions taken across the EU as well as practical tools for adaptation planning.
- There is currently no specific EU legislation underpinning the EU Climate Adaptation Strategy at this time, however the European Commission is keeping this under review in terms of progress made at individual member state level.
Further information on EU adaptation policy is available on the European Commission website.
