No part of Ireland left behind - Minister White

Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry, 8 September 2014

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White T.D., said today marked another important milestone in the delivery of high speed broadband to all parts of Ireland. Commenting at an event in Cahersiveen to mark eircom's e-fibre network passing 1 million premises, the Minister said "The commercial sector is investing over approximately €2.5bn in telecommunications infrastructure and services in Ireland. This is a real vote of confidence in Irish consumers, Irish businesses and the economy as a whole".

The Minister acknowledged however that there are parts of Ireland, particularly rural Ireland, where commercial investment will not be forthcoming. He reaffirmed the Government's commitment to an ambitious state-led intervention in these areas, ensuring that no part of Ireland is left behind. The Minister said "Delivering high speed broadband to all parts of Ireland is a top priority for Government. The Government will invest in those parts of Ireland where commercial investment is not possible. We intend to ensure that high speed broadband is available to every citizen and business in the country irrespective of their location."

The Minister further noted that a mapping exercise was underway in his Department which would identify the areas that require a State-led intervention. The Map will be published for public consultation later this year. In conclusion the Minister noted that through this combination of commercial and State investment the broadband challenge in Ireland will be conclusively addressed.
