Dublin, 9 September 2015
The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White T.D., today laid the RTÉ Annual Report and Group Financial Statements for the Year Ended 31st December 2014 before the Houses of the Oireachtas. RTÉ is publishing the report this afternoon.
The Minister commented "I welcome the stable financial performance achieved by RTÉ in light of a continued reduction in licence fee income and the challenging and increasingly fragmented market in which it operates".
RTÉ has reported a surplus before tax of €0.9 million, a similar result to the €1.1m surplus in the previous year. Minister White also noted the significant contribution of the previous Board in addressing the challenges faced by RTÉ in recent years.
Despite the financial challenges, the Minister stated "I applaud RTÉ for adjusting to a transformed broadcasting environment and placing digital services at the centre of its public service remit. This focus has helped drive a range of innovative digital services, notably GAAGO and the revamped News Now mobile application."
The Minister reconfirmed the Government's commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable level of funding for public service broadcasting and stated that it was his intention to bring forward legislation which will reinforce the current TV licensing system and help tackle the high level of TV license fee evasion.
