We are aware of the problems caused by illegal dumping, irrespective of the nature of the material being dumped or where it has been dumped. Illegal dumping is first and foremost a matter of individual responsibility and compliance with the law. While enforcement action in this area is a matter in the first instance for local authorities, the Department encourages a multi-facetted approach to tackling the problem, incorporating enforcement, public awareness and education.
The Department developed an Anti-Dumping Initiative to work in partnership with local authorities and community organisations in identifying high risk or problem areas, developing appropriate enforcement responses and carrying out clean-up operations. The initiative is co-ordinated through the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authorities (WERLAs). Funding of €6.3 million has been provided to date which has supported over 700 projects across all 31 local authorities.
Applications for the 2020 Anti-Dumping Initiative are now open, you can find more information below.
