The National Plan for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Exposures co-ordinates the emergency response to a situation where Ireland is threatened with or experiencing a widespread emergency level of radioactive contamination, whether the contamination source is in Ireland, the UK or another country.
While the Department of Communications, Climate Action & Environment has overall lead responsibility for the Plan, important support roles are also provided by other Departments and Agencies, including:

- Department of Defence
- Department of Health
- Health Service Executive
- Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine
- Food Safety Authority of Ireland
- An Garda Siochana
- Irish Coast Guard
