The Public sector have to improve energy efficiency by 33% by end 2020. All PS bodies are required by law to report their energy use each year to the SEAI to enable progress to be measured. SEAI publish the results annually and the performance achieved by end 2018 is set out in SEAI's sixth Annual Report. The key findings include:
- The public sector overall had achieved 27% of the 33% Efficiency by end 2018 – with 2 consecutive years of sustained progress since the Public Sector Energy Efficiency Strategy was introduced in 2017 – as a result the public sector overall is again on the trajectory to achieve its 33% target.
- The improved efficiencies achieved amounts to €246m of energy spend savings and a 761,000 tonnes of emissions savings for 2018 with cumulative performance between 2009 and 2018 amounting to 4.6 million tonnes avoided CO2 emissions, and energy spend savings of €1.307 billion.
