European Issues

Co-operation on broadcasting, audiovisual and other media matters has long been part of the relations between European countries. Such co-operation has primarily taken place through two bodies:

In the case of the EU, Article 167 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union encourages co-operation between Member States on audiovisual matters and permits the Union to take further action if it is deemed warranted. The Audiovisual Media Services Directive is currently in place in the EU.
