2016 Annual Review of the Emergency Call Answering Service (ECAS)


The Emergency Call Answering ECAS answers all calls to the EU Emergency Phone Numbers 112 or 999 and forwards calls to the relevant Emergency Service. The ECAS has answered over 14 million calls since it was launched in July 2010 and answered a total of 1,761,166 calls in 2016.

The Emergency Call Answering Service (ECAS) is responsible for answering all 112 and 999 calls, providing a vital link between the caller and the Emergency Services. Its role is to respond to all incoming calls and texts, identify and pass the call through to the appropriate Emergency Service. It also provides an emergency text service (112SMS) for people with disabilities. Calls and texts to 112/999 are free of charge to the caller.
